Berlin Central Station (Hauptbahnhof Berlin in German) is the largest railway station of the European Union step. As its name suggests, is located in the center of Berlin (Germany), near the Chancellery, the Reichstag (German Parliament Building) and the Brandenburg Gate.
The complex is designed by the German architect Meinhard von Gerkan. The initial project cost was 700 million euros, an amount that rose to 900 million.
station from the river Spree.
History The station was designed from 1992 and construction began in 1995.3 was inaugurated on May 26, 2006, just in time for the celebration of the World Cup 2006.
The station replaces the eight terminals were in Berlin at the end of the nineteenth century with a single trading station in the form of two-level crossing.
The old terminal stations were severely damaged in World War II, and subsequently separated from their surroundings by the terms of the division of Germany into two states and three western sectors of Berlin. All the railway network of Berlin, East and West, was managed and operated by the Reichsbahn in the GDR. The few trains that linked West Berlin with West Germany (West Germany) did not finish in the historic terminal stations for their destinations and origins, but spent all the Stadtbahn, the railway viaduct through the center of Berlin east-west and through the territory of the GDR in Friedrichstaße station. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the unification and also the decision to deploy the capital to Berlin forced to make major changes to integrate the new situation. The Stadtbahn had insufficient capacity for all traffic that had been created.
The solution made in the context of the Remodeling in Berlin is a mushroom with the cap design layout by Stadtbahn and stem for the new north-south line in the north-south tunnel. The crossing station was built on the site of the old Lehrter Bahnhof (Station Lehrte) near the end of the trains arrived from Hannover, Cologne and the nearby Ruhr Hamburg Station. Northern Trains arrive in the northern arch of the Ringbahn, circular railway line and west by the Stadtbahn.
lines formerly served by the Anhalter Bahnhof are linked to the central station by the north-south tunnel Fernbahn (Fernbahn or long distance to distinguish the tunnel north-south S-Bahn Berlin that are not supported by their different electrifición and the height of the trains).
Antigua Lehrter Bahnhof (1879), most of the city was destroyed by the Allies during the Second World War.
Operation Daily circulation is approximately 240,000 people spread over some 500 trains in the north-south and about 250 in the east-west. This is compounded by the movement of 1,000 trains trams and metro.
has 6 tracks on three platforms at the East-West, ie the top level of the viaduct and 8-way Stadtbahn underground North-South axis. It also has more than 80 businesses.
The building
The total area is 70,000 m² spread over five floors with a total of 15,000 m² for restaurants and shops in the three central plants, while the upper and lower house the railway platforms. On both sides of the station stand two office blocks.
The station is a few hundred yards from the old station Berlin Hauptbahnhof, Lehrter Bahnhof S-Bahn (Stadtbahn) Berlín-Spandau/Berlín-Charlottenburgo connecting with Berlin-Friedrichstrasse, Berlin-Alexanderplatz, Berlin and Berlin Ostbahnhof -Lichtenberg. The old station was demolished in the early 2000s, when it was built the infrastructure of the current Central Station to avoid cutting the major rail traffic that supports the Stadtbahn (a train every 30 seconds).
The station is a key element in the development of this area, with a development plan that maintains a balance between offices, hotels, shops, houses and gardens.
This station is equidistant from the two stations that were an party central stations in the city was divided before the fall of the Berlin Wall, Alexanderplatz in East Berlin and West Berlin Zoologischer Garten. Across the Spree River is the Parliamentary complex and the chancellery.
The central part is a curved arch of 20,000 m², consisting of 8,500 glasses of different sizes together for more than 80,000 m of braces.

The station meets the highest standards of green architecture can implement this kind of constructions. The skillful use of natural light and especially the installation of photovoltaic panels on the roof, which provide about 50% of energy consumption of the season, put this book as a reference on the subject.
The fourth part of the budget was assigned to the foundation, and that the plant is located on the banks of the Spree river, over a territory which is based about 100 m of sand. We used a technique that involves building concrete ponds of 25 m deep, filled with ground water that was pumped.
is a fact that Berlin has the most impressive season in the world.
